Kolkata Metro creates history, completes underwater test run under Hooghly river
Kolkata Metro created history on April 12 and conducted a test run of the country’s first underwater metro. For the first time in India, Metro has completed an underwater test run under Hooghly river. The trial run was 4.8 km long between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan. It is expected that the metro will cover 520 meters stretch in just 45 seconds. P Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway travelled from Mahakaran to Howrah Maidan station to witness a historic event. The regular service will begin after trial runs from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade for the next 7 months. It is expected that commercial services on this stretch will begin in 2023. Howrah will be the deepest Metro station (33 meters below surface) in the country. Reddy also offered puja at Howrah station once the rake reached Howrah Maidan station. Kolkata Metro added another feather to its cap as it was also the country’s first metro railway that started in Kolkata in 1984.
