PM Modi leads his way to new Parliament; marks beginning of New India

Marking a new beginning for the Indian Democracy and its politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament building on May 28 in Delhi. The new complex witnessed one of the most gala inaugural ceremonies as the PM also installed the Sengol, the historic scepter from Tamil Nadu. The Sengol has been placed near the seat of the Lok Sabha Speaker, and is a symbol of the transfer of power. Many ‘Adheenams’ were also invited, who performed the holy ceremony while the PM was handed over the Sengol.

'Sengol' is something to do with our culture and culture cannot be ignored: Padma Subrahmanyam

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament Building on Sunday. On the special occasion, classical dancer and author Padma Subrahmanyam discussed the role of 'Sengol' established in the new Parliament House. Talking to ANI, Padma shared her happiness about the new parliament building inauguration. He said," All that I have to say I feel so happy. The small letter that I wrote has such a great effect. I am only praying when the new parliament building is inaugurated, it is the beginning of the golden age of Indian history. She further added, "Let the 'Sengol' stand there erect reminding people of the importance of being straightforward, caring for people, and not bending in any way away from justice." Regarding her book on Sengol and how crucial it is to Tamil culture, she said, the idea of "Dharma Dhand" has existed throughout India since the Ramayana and Mahabharata eras, and there has been a continuation of that tradition in South India. "Dharma Dhanda" is known as "Sengol" in Tamil. She added, "Sengol means that stick which reminds you of refinement in thought words and action." Padma shared her thoughts on the letter she wrote to the prime minister regarding Sengol, she said, " So, this is a very happy moment and I feel particularly gratified and thankful to god... I send a letter to the honourable prime minister. Translating the very important article that came from 'Thuglak Tamil magazine' and the article was written by no less than a person 'Shri GuruMurti'. and this is the letter that I sent to Prime Minister ji in 2021. And it has rectified so well much more than what I expected." Further, she explained how governance has to be, "Governance has to be based on ethical ideals for the welfare of humanity and 'Sengol' was not representing monarchy but it was given to the king by the Rajguru. For him, to remember that justice is something that cannot be compromised. So, this is the philosophy of 'Sengol'. When asked about the politics that took place regarding the establishment of 'Sengol', she replied, "I am not a politician, to be honest, and I dont understand petty-mindedness because 'Sengol' is something to do with our culture and culture cannot be ignored whether you are a politician. If my country is known all over the world, it is because of the culture, and the preservation of the culture that we have cultural values." Padma urged those who interpret 'Sengol' as a religious symbol to view it as a stunning work of art. "Still, you adore it. What an amazing carving you have. History is significant, and every person should be proud of their heritage. Other nations are extremely proud of their short histories. And I can't think of any reason why we shouldn't be proud of our own past." She added, "Even if you want to interpret 'Sengol' as a religious symbol, take it as a beautiful piece of art. You still love it. What a wonderful carving you have. And our country has a culture that gives culture to symbolism. Symbolism is very important for everything. There is meaning and emblem for every ethical value. "So, I hope people understand these ethical values of 'Sengol' and stop this unnecessary waste of time instead of taking pride and owning the whole success story of building a beautiful, wonderful castle that is a temple of democracy. I don't think there should be room for any petty-mindedness," She said. Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi installed the sacred 'Sengol' in the new Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker's chair, after performing puja. PM Modi also prostrated as a mark of respect before the 'Sengol' during the ceremony. Before it was installed in the new Parliament building, PM Modi was handed over the historic 'Sengol' by Adheenams. The 'Sengol' marked the transfer of power from the British to the Indians in 1947. The new Parliament building will enable 888 members to sit in the Lok Sabha. In the present structure of the Parliament, there is a provision for the sitting of 543 Members in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha. Keeping in view the future requirements, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber.

“Everyone should embrace this symbol…” Shashi Tharoor differs over party’s stand on ‘Sengol’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated new Parliament building to the nation on May 28. He installed the historic ‘Sengol’ near Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair in the Parliament. However, 20 opposition parties including Congress decided to skip the inaugural ceremony event. Meanwhile, going against its party line Congress leader Acharya Pramod has called out the Opposition for boycotting the inauguration. Acharya Pramod advised the Opposition to oppose PM Modi but not the entire nation while urging them to reconsider their decision. The BJP claimed that the “Sengol” was handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru by Mountbatten to mark the transfer of power from British to Indians. Congress denied this argument and claimed that the sceptre was presented to Nehru by a religious institution in then Madras. Keeping aside the arguments, Congress Leader Tharoor said that everyone should “embrace the symbol from the past to affirm the values of the present”Although some Congress leaders, come out hard against the Centre accusing it of spreading "false narratives". Tharoor's stand is quite different from what other party leaders have taken on the issue of 'Sengol'

In his address to Adheenams, he said, "I am delighted that tomorrow at the time of the inauguration of the new Parliament building, all of you are going to personally come there and give blessings." Highlighting the role of Tamil Nadu in the freedom struggle, he said the southern State has been a bastion of Indian nationalism in every era. "Despite this, it is unfortunate that the Tamil people were not given the importance they should have been given during India's independence. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started raising this issue prominently," PM Modi said, adding that now the people of the country are also coming to know what happened to Tamil Nadu. He said that when the time of independence came, there was a question about the symbol of the transfer of power. At that time under the guidance of Raja ji and Adheenams, we got a virtuous path from our ancient Tamil culture. "And the way was of the transfer of power through Sengol," he said. He went on to add that in Tamil tradition, Sengol was given to the ruler. It was a symbol that the person, bearing it, has the responsibility of ensuring the welfare of the country and will never deviate from the path of duty. "Today, photographs from that period (1947) remind us of the passionate and intimate connection between Tamil culture and India's destiny as a modern democracy. Today, the saga of those deep ties has once again come alive after coming out of the buried pages of history. Our youth and our working population bring development but this population only be good when it would be disciplined and skilled," he added. He also mentioned that if our youth gets involved in illegal activities then the demographic dividend will not be beneficial. "Somehow if these youth goes on to do wrong things or get involved in illegal activities like stone pelting and burning busses etc then this demographic dividend will not be beneficial," the former army chief said. He also mentioned that during his tenure as army chief, a lot of policies were made by the Defence ministry in the central government. "Apart from this as a former Army Chief a lot of policies were made by the defence ministry. Firstly Sainik School which are doubled, now, in fact, girls can also join it. Also, private schools can be part of Sainik School as per new schemes. Second is NCC, the government have increased the vacancy in NCC which is now 2 lakh from 1 lakh earlier. Third the Agnipath Scheme, this was also a step to bring nationalism among youth to make them disciplined and skilled and if we have such skilled and disciplined youth it will bring nationalism among them," he said. He also mentioned many factors are involved when it comes to national security and it is not just the army's responsibility to secure the nation. "When we speak about national security we always think of Army but it is more than that, it involves many things. There are many threats. There are external threats and internal threats, and there are threats that involved in National security like in food, health, energy, water cyber security etc these all are part of national security and everyone who's is connected contributes to securing them like a doctor secure health sector like Enforcement Directorate brings black money like a Techie secures our cyber threats so it's not just Army's responsibility it a responsibility of all to strengthen the Country," he said.

"If Rahul Gandhi is here...": Smriti Irani in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): Union Minister Smriti Irani on Monday urged the people of Kerala to ensure defeat of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad as he deprived Amethi of development and he will do the same in his constituency of the southern state. Crediting herself for having ousted Rahul Gandhi from the Gandhi family Lok Sabha bastion in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, she said that the Congress leader, who was elected as a member of Parliament from Kerala's Wayanad, should be defeated in the upcoming general elections next year. "It was me who sent him to Wayanad from Uttar Pradesh. What was the reason behind (Congress) sending him to Wayanad? When he was an MP there, 80 per cent of the people didn't have electricity, the district collector didn't have an office, there was no fire station. When the Wayanad MP (Rahul Gandhi) was in Amethi, there was no medical college. There was no Sainik School or Kendriya Vidyalaya. When he left (in 2019), all this was possible," the Union Minister said. "If he (Rahul Gandhi) is here (Wayanad), the same (previous) situation as Amethi will be in Wayanad. So you (people of Kerala) should ensure that he is not here," she told while addressing the state-level women's labour convention's inauguration organised by the Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). It is pertinent to mention that Irani had defeated Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Amethi which has long been a Gandhi family bastion, where the likes of Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have been MPs. Irani had to taste defeat from Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. However, she ended the long-prevailing Gandhi family bastion in the 2019 general elections. Rahul Gandhi, then, had contested from Amethi and Wayanad in which he lost the former and emerged victorious in the latter. However, he was disqualified as an MP earlier this year after being convicted in a defamation case in Surat.

Only 16 pc of people in Pakistan believe local economy is getting better: Report

Islamabad : Only 16 per cent of people in Pakistan believe that their local economy is getting better, which is the lowest in the region except for Afghanistan, Dawn reported citing a Gallup survey report released this week. The survey by Gallup World Poll showcases how the unrest in Pakistan is rooted in its economic woes. The survey stated that the perceptions of corruption in Pakistan have reached a record high, living standards have plummeted and left millions of people struggling to meet their basic needs. The survey revealed that the economic downturn is being felt hardest in Sindh. The authors Hashim Pasha and Benedict Vigers in the report said, "Except for Afghanistan, where the economy has crumbled since the Taliban's takeover, Pakistan ranks lower than all other countries in the Asia-Pacific region in perceptions of improving economic conditions." 86 per cent of Pakistanis consider corruption to be widespread in Pakistan's government and 80 per cent believe that corruption in businesses has hit record highs, Dawn reported. Showcasing the connection between the recent political turmoil and economic crisis, the authors said that Pakistan's economy has seen record inflation, rising commodity prices, and significant declines in foreign investment and remittances, as per the Dawn report. Catastrophic floods in 2022, partly overlapping the timing of Gallup's fieldwork in Pakistan also caused an estimated USD 15 billion in economic losses. The report said that former Pakistan PM Imran Khan's arrest Imran Khan and the "subsequent civil unrest have added to the economic misery" as the value of Pakistani rupees (PKR) against the dollar dropped to a historic low. The report said, "Recent mass protests coupled with an ongoing constitutional crisis have compounded the already chronic sense of instability in the South Asian nation and have made its efforts to avoid a sovereign default more precarious," according to Dawn report. The authors said that at the beginning of Imran Khan's tenure as Pakistan's PM in 2018, Pakistani were far more likely to think their living standards were getting better than getting worse. The outlook of people in Pakistan has worsened ever since, according to the report. In 2022, 19 per cent of Pakistanis said their living standards were improving and 48 per cent said they were getting worse. According to the survey, Pakistani women are more likely to be affected by the economic slump than men, Dawn reported. The number of people in Pakistan who struggled to afford shelter increased in 2022 to 32 per cent, which is one of its highest points on record, as per the Dawn report. Speaking about the ongoing political situation in Pakistan, the report said that "the country is on the brink of default, and its future is deeply uncertain." According to the report, the quality of life in Pakistan is unlikely to improve "as long as a sustainable political solution remains elusive," Dawn reported. It warned that until it happens, the people of Pakistan will continue to believe that they live in a corrupt system.
