Union Budget 2023: Odisha CM hails some key announcements, criticises a few others

While sharing the response over budget, CM Patnaik said that the budget has some good aspects which need to be appreciated and there are some concerns which need to be looked into and addressed. "Good steps are increased capital investment, support to drinking water initiatives and increasing rural housing. These will accelerate growth as well as have a social impact in rural areas. I also welcome the Prime Minister's thrust on millets. 'Odisha Millet Mission' is a pioneering initiative in the country and I am happy that millets have been given importance in the Budget," CM Patnaik said. "The focus on new world technologies like artificial intelligence is also appreciable. These are some of the good aspects of the Budget. The focus on primitive tribal groups is a welcome step," he added. Denouncing some budget declarations, he said, "I have concerns regarding the drastic reduction of funds for MGNREGS. This will hit the poor people. The reduction in the food security budget along with a reduction in procurement will hit the poor people as well as farmers. About 80 thousand crores were spent on procurement in 2021-22 while only about 60 thousand crores are kept in this budget. This will cause serious problems in selling crops at Minimum Support Price." There has been a decrease or no growth in health and education sectors," he added. Hitting out at state Bharatiya Janata Party leader, CM further said, "I hope that state BJP leaders will stop misleading the people of the state on Ayushman Bharat Yojana. The budget provision for Ayushman Bharat 'PMJAY' is Rs 7,200 crores for the entire country among which alone Odisha spends almost Rs 2,400 crores on Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) in private facilities." Health is an important priority for our State and we believe in investing and in sincere efforts," he added.Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the "first budget of Amrit Kaal" and said it would lay a strong foundation for building a developed India. Undoubtedly, Congress will form govt in Haryana: Rahul Gandhi

Kurukshetra (Haryana): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday asserted that the party will form a government in Haryana in the upcoming Assembly elections next year. "There is no doubt that the Congress government will come to power in Haryana. I am interested in the fact that if the Congress government comes to power in Haryana, it should be a government of farmers, a government that respects everyone and listens to everyone," Gandhi said. The Congress leader claimed that the voice of India is being suppressed, hatred and fear are being spread, efforts are being made to divide the country and the Bharat Jodo Yatra is against the forces who seek to suppress these voices. "The aim of the yatra is to listen to the true voice of the country. Today, inequality is increasing in India. The entire economic power is going in the hands of 3-4 people and this has resulted in rapidly rising unemployment and inflation," he said. Speaking on the issue of farmers, Rahul Gandhi said that during the yatra, the farmers told the "truth of Haryana". "Today the farmer is being surrounded from all sides. He is being hit directly by the price of diesel petrol, by not giving insurance compensation, by the rising price of fertilizers. Farmers' income did not double, it decreased. Farmers only saw an increase in input prices, not one and a half times MSP," he said."The loan waiver was given only to the billionaires, not the farmers. The Prime Minister made an all-out attack on the farmers, using black laws and export policy as weapons. India cannot move forward, if it leaves behind its farmers. When our government comes, the farmers will be protected and they will be helped,' he added. Earlier today, the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi saw people gathered in large numbers, walking with enthusiasm as the yatra resumed from the Dodwa-Taraori crossing. On the 114th day of the yatra, party leaders Selja Kumari and Deepender Singh Hooda joined Rahul Gandhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had called his Bharat Jodo Yatra as 'Mohabbat ka dukaan' (shop of love) amid an existing 'nafrat ka bazaar' (market of hatred) while responding to BJP leaders who questioned him for conducting the ongoing Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot-march. The 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' marched into Karnal on Saturday. The Bharat Jodo Yatra re-entered Haryana on Thursday evening and will pass through four districts of the state between January 5-10. Bharat Jodo Yatra covered over 130 km in the first phase in Haryana between December 21-23 when it passed through Nuh, Gurugram, and Faridabad districts.

Tunisha Sharma's death a matter of "love jihad", claims Maharashtra Minister

Nashik (Maharashtra): Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan on Sunday claimed that the death of actor Tunisha Sharma is a matter of "love jihad" and the state police are investigating the case. The minister also stressed that the Eknath Shinde government in the state is mulling bringing a strict law against 'love jihad'. This comes a day after Tunisha Sharma allegedly died by suicide on the sets of her show. Speaking to ANI, Mahajan said, "It is a matter of 'love jihad' and police are investigating the case. We are seeing that such cases are increasing day by day and we are mulling bringing a strict law against it". However, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chandrakant Jadhav said that there is no angle of any other affair, blackmailing or 'Love Jihad', as of now. "The investigation is underway. Accused Sheezan's and the deceased's phones have been seized. There is no angle of any other affair, blackmailing or 'Love Jihad', as of now," he said. Earlier today, police said the reason behind Tunisha's alleged extreme step was her breakup with co-star Sheezan Mohammed Khan over a fortnight back. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against Sheezan under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, after his 'Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul' co-star was found dead on the set. Sheezan was taken by the officials from Waliv police station to the Vasai court on Sunday. At the court, Sheezan's lawyer, Sharad Rai, spoke to the media saying, "He (Sheezan Khan) was been produced in court. Allegations against him are baseless." Tunisha's last rites will be performed on December 27 in Mumbai's Mira road area, her maternal uncle Pawan Sharma told media.

Putin threatens to destroy Ukraine's Patriot Missile Systems, provided by the US

Moscow [Russia]: Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to "weed out" the Patriot air defence system the United States plans to supply to Kyiv amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Pentagon this week announced an additional USD 850 million of security assistance for Ukraine, bringing total military aid for Kyiv to USD 21.9 billion since the beginning of the Biden administration. The latest assistance included the Patriot Air Defence System, capable of bringing down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher ceiling. "It is said that the Patriot systems may be sent to Ukraine. Let them do it; we will weed out the Patriots too. And they will have to send something to replace them with or create new systems," Putin told reporters, adding that the deliveries would extend the fighting. "We take this into account and count everything that is being sent there, how many systems there are in the depots, how many more they can manufacture and how fast, and if they can train the necessary personnel," he added. Putin made these remarks in response to a question on the agreement on supplying Patriot missile battery to Ukraine that was reached during Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the United States. The Russia President dismissed the Patriot system as a pretty "old system" and added that "it doesn't work like our S-300." "Nevertheless, those who oppose us assume that these systems are defensive weapons. All right. We will just keep that in mind, and there is always an antidote. So those who are doing this, are doing it in vain: it just prolongs the conflict, and that's that," he added. Over the war in Ukraine, Putin said Russia was aiming for a speedy end to the conflict and that fighting should end as soon as possible. "In short, we will do our best to end this, and the sooner, the better, of course. As for what and how this is taking place, I have noted on numerous occasions that the intensification of the conflict will lead to unjustified losses," he added. Answering why his annual address was cancelled this year, Putin said the problem is these are fast-moving events, and the situation is developing very rapidly. He said it is rather difficult to pin down results at a specific moment and specific plans for the near future. "But the point of the address lies in what I have just said. It has been reflected in my statements one way or another," he added.

"Govt has kept country in dark for days," Owaisi lashes out at Centre after Tawang face-off reports emerge

New Delhi: Soon after reports of a face-off between the Indian and Chinese troops in the Tawang sector in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday surfaced, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi lashed out at the Centre accusing it of keeping the country in the "dark" for days and asked why Parliament was not informed about the incident. A face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in the Tawang sector in Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 led to minor injuries "to a few personnel" from both sides, sources said on Monday and noted that both sides immediately disengaged from the area. Taking to Twitter on Monday, Owaisi, who is an MP in the Lok Sabha, said that he would give an adjournment motion on Tuesday on the issue. He called the reports from Arunachal "worrying and alarming". "The reports coming from Arunachal Pradesh are worrying and alarming. A major clash took place between Indian and Chinese soldiers and the government has kept the country in the dark for days. Why was the Parliament not informed, when it is in session?" Owaisi tweeted. The AIMIM chief said that the details that have come to the fore are "sketchy" and sought clarity on the incident if it was similar to Galwan in which soldiers from the Indian side had suffered casualties. "The details of the incident are sketchy. What was the cause of the clash? Were shots fired or was it like Galwan? How many soldiers have been injured? What is their condition? Why can't the Parliament extend their public support to the soldiers to send a strong message to China?" he tweeted. Owaisi also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership calling it "weak" and said that it led to "humiliation against China". He called for an "urgent" discussion in Parliament on the issue. "The army is capable of giving a fitting reply to the Chinese at any time. It is the weak political leadership under Modi which has led to this humiliation against China. This needs an urgent discussion in Parliament. I will be giving an Adjournment motion tomorrow on this issue," Owaisi tweeted. The sources said on December 9, 2022, PLA troops contacted the LAC in the Tawang Sector of Arunachal Pradesh which was contested by Indian troops in a firm and resolute manner. "This face-off led to minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides. Both sides immediately disengaged from the area," a source said. They said as a follow-up of the incident, India's Commander in the area held a Flag Meeting with his counterpart to discuss the issue in accordance with structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquillity. The sources said that in certain areas along the LAC in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh there are areas of differing perception, wherein both sides patrol the area up to their claim lines. This has been the trend since 2006.
