Amit Shah praises Yediyurappa, Bommai for "good governance" in Karnataka

Bengaluru (Karnataka): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday lauded Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his immediate predecessor and BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa stating that both have provided "good governance" during their respective tenures. Citing the developmental work done by the BJP government under both chief ministers, Shah urged the people to form the party's government with a full majority in the upcoming Assembly elections slated this year. "Earlier under Yediyurappa and now under the leadership of Basavaraj Bommai, the Prime Minister has given an impetus to Karnataka's development with a sense of team India in the last four years. In Yediyurappa's tenure, I congratulate him for the way he managed the COVID preparation. I used to interact with Chief Ministers of various states then via video conference. It was a matter of concern to save Bengaluru from COVID. But the way Yediyurappa managed the situation is commendable. After Bommai came, he carried forward good governance like Yediyurappa," the Home Minister said. He said that the BJP government will take the state forward not just in the country but in the world. "I want to tell the people of Karnataka that you gave 104 seats in the last elections, we fell short of the majority mark because of which one and a quarter years were wasted. I urge you to form the BJP government with a full majority. I assure you that the double-engine government will take Karnataka ahead not just in India but in the world," he said.Shah further lauded the Karnataka government's decision to scrap the four per cent OBC reservation for Muslims and distribute it to dominant communities, Veerashaiva-Lingayats and Vokkaligas and said that the government's move was according to the Constitution which earlier (reservation based on religion) was against the Constitution. "The founding fathers of the Constitution never gave reservation based on religion. But Congress and its ally governments started reservation based on religion due to vote bank politics. They had done a reservation of 4 per cent for the minority based on religion in Karnataka. I congratulate CM Bommai that he ended that reservation and gave reservation according to the Constitution," he said. "Only they can do development who are committed to it. Only they can end corruption who has a love for the nation. PM Modi has secured the nation on internal and external fronts with commitment," Shah added. Taking a swipe at Congress, the Home Minister said that Karnataka does not need a party whose leaders indulge in conflicts over the chief minister's post. "Karnataka does not need parties which have conflict on who will become the chief minister. It needs a team of patriots like BJP which works under the leadership of PM Modi. Today is a historic day for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Today, the statues of Lord Basavanna ji and Kempegowda ji, who spread the message of India to the whole world, have been unveiled here. These statues will give the message of democracy, social justice and good governance to the representatives coming to the assembly," he said.

"Losing whatsoever little trust left": Anurag Thakur rails against Rahul Gandhi in series of tweets

New Delhi : Union Minister Anurag Thakur, in a rail of tweets on Saturday, launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, saying that he was losing whatever trust the people have in him through gimmicks and cheap publicity. The Congress leader lost his membership of the Lok Sabha on Friday. His disqualification from the Lower House followed a day after his conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case. The Surat court, which sentenced the Congress leader to 2 years in prison, later stayed the sentence for a period of 30 days during which he can move a higher court challenging his conviction. Accusing Rahul of 'political immaturity', Thakur said, "RG is a case of political immaturity, losing whatsoever little trust left, for gimmicks and cheap popularity." "Elected representatives automatically stand disqualified moment they are convicted by Hon. court to jail for two or more years. GOI and LS have no role to play. It can't suspend or revoke disqualification," the Union Sports minister said in another tweet. Further weighing in on Rahul's disqualification from the Lower House, which saw several Opposition break ranks to throw their weights behind him, Thakur posted, "Rahul Gandhi is not the first to face disqualification. Wonder whether legal wizards of Congress have checked the rules. Instead, they are brazenly defending their hatred for OBC, which caused his conviction thus showing utter disrespect towards judiciary and people." Citing a previous case to support his argument, the Union minister said in another tweet, "In 2013 Lily Thomas Vs Union of India case, SC set aside Section 8(4) of RP Act which once protected convicted legislators from disqualification on account of their pending appeal. As per judgment, disqualification is automatically effective from the date of conviction." "Constitution expressly prohibits Parliament to defer date from which a disqualification wud come into effect. LS Speaker is bound by the RP Act and SC judgment to issue membership termination order," read another tweet by the minister. The case, which led to Rahul's disqualification as an MP, pertains to an election rally in Karnataka, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, in which made a remark using the surname 'Modi'. The Congress leader, who was elected an MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala, was disqualified under provisions of Article 102 (1) (e) of the Constitution read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Addressing a poll rally in Kolar, Karnataka, Rahul said, "How come all the thieves have Modi as their surname?" The criminal defamation case against Rahul was filed by former Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

"Don't pretend to be a pressman... kyun hawa nikal gayi ": Rahul Gandhi on question over BJP's 'insult OBC' allegations against him

New Delhi : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday got apparently worked up over a journalist's question over BJP's 'OBC insult' allegations against him and said the question had been posed to him earlier and "if you want to work for BJP, put it on your chest'" Gandhi was addressing a press conference a day after his disqualification from Lok Sabha following conviction by a Gujarat court in a criminal defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remarks. Following his conviction, BJP leaders have targeted Gandhi and repeatedly alleged that his remarks showed "how deep rooted his hatred for OBCs is." A journalist asked Gandhi about BJP's allegations and its plans for nationwide pressers. Gandhi said these "attempts" had been made earlier during his presser. "Why are you working so directly for BJP, do it with some discretion, ask it in roundabout...see there is smile..if you want to work for the BJP, then bring a BJP flag, symbol and put it on your chest, then I'll answer you the same way I answer them. Don't pretend to be a pressman," he said. "Hawa nikal gayi," he said a moment later before moving on to other questions. Earlier, answering a similar question on BJP allegations, Gandhi had said that in all his speeches during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, he had talked of need of unity and spoken against efforts to spread hatred. He said it was not a matter concerning OBCs but of "relations between Narendra Modiji and Adaniji" and accused the BJP of trying to divert attention from the issue. He said that Modi government was scared of his questions on Adani issue. Stating that he was not scared of threats, disqualification and prison sentences, Rahul Gandhi said that he will not "back down" from asking questions on the Adani stocks issue. "This is the whole drama that is been orchestrated to defend the Prime Minister from the simple question- Who's Rs 20,000 crore went to Adani's shell companies? I am not scared of these threats, disqualifications or prison sentences," he said. "I am not interested in anything but the truth. I only speak the truth, it is my work and I will keep doing it even if I get disqualified or get arrested. This country has given me everything and that is why I do this. I will keep asking questions on Adani issue, they cannot scare me by disqualification or putting me in jail. I won't back down," he said.

"BJP wants to avoid Adani questions, PM silent on him": Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi : Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday launched a fresh attack on the BJP over her brother and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha, saying the move was a ploy by the ruling party to evade questions on the Adani issue in Parliament. Taking to Twitter, Priyanka Gandhi posted, "BJP wants to avoid this (Adani) question. The entire Parliament, barring the Opposition, is silent and the Prime Minister himself has turned mute." "They (BJP) are levelling all kinds of charges on Rahul. However, the PM remains silent on whose money was invested in shell companies owned by Gautam Adani and why isn't it being investigated," Priyanka wrote. Tagging a photograph of her brother to her post, Priyanka highlighted three key statements of Rahul during a press conference on his disqualification on Saturday. In the first of these three statements, Rahul said, "Prime Minister was scared of my next speech that was to come on Adani. I saw it in his eyes." "The moot question remains: who invested Rs 20,000 crore in the Adani shell firms? I will keep raising this question," the former Wayanad MP said, in another statement that her sister highlighted. In the third statement that Priyanka tagged to her post, Rahul refused to tender an apology for the remark for which he was convicted and eventually disqualified from the Lower House, saying, "My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi. Gandhis don't apologise to anyone." Rahul claimed that he was not scared of going to prison, adding his disqualification was aimed merely at diverting public attention from the controversy over the report by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research against the Adani Group. He alleged that the BJP-led central government was protecting the billionaire investor, who was accused of stock manipulation by the US short-seller. "Why is the BJP protecting Gautam Adani? Kyun ki aap hi Adani ho," Rahul alleged. He added, "The whole game of disqualification and allegations (against him) by ministers is aimed at distracting people from the Adani issue."

Rahul Gandhi a habitual offender, Congress' reactions show its "scant respect" for country's institutions: Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi : Lashing out at Congress over the Surat court's verdict on Rahul Gandhi, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday alleged that the remarks of its leaders show they have "scant respect" for the institutions of the country. The Minister accused the Congress of "raising fingers" at the judiciary while also attempting to "demean" its pride. He also described Gandhi as a "habitual offender". This comes after Congress leaders backed Rahul Gandhi after Surat court sentenced him to two-year imprisonment for 'Modi surname' remark. The court, however, later stayed the sentence and allowed him 30 days time to approach the higher courts. "The reactions of Congress and its leaders make it clear that they have scant respect for the institutions and they are repeatedly showing it. If the judgment had been on anybody else, they would have welcomed and celebrated it but they have started raising fingers at the judiciary after today's verdict. They are demeaning the pride of the judiciary. They are protesting against the verdict of the judiciary outside the court," Joshi said while addressing the media. "During the course of the inquiry, the court repeatedly told (him) to apologise but he (Rahul Gandhi) clearly denied it. When the court has delivered the verdict, they do not have remorse. If we look at Rahul Gandhi's history, he is a habitual offender," he added. Recalling the incident in which Rahul Gandhi, the then Vice President of Congress, tore the ordinance papers in 2013, Joshi said that he should stop showing "disrespect" against the constitutional institutions of the country, failing which he would be taught a lesson by the people of India. "When there was Manmohan Singh's government, he had torn apart the ordinance on the same matter. The ordinance was called non-sense (by Rahul Gandhi). Showing disrespect against constitutional institutions has become his habit. We condemn it. He should stop doing it or the people would teach him a lesson," he said. Earlier today, some Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, referred to a change of judge in the case. "He (Rahul Gandhi) has been granted bail. We knew from the beginning because they kept changing judges. We believe in law, and judiciary and we will fight against this as per law," Kharge said. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the party has been saying that democracy is in danger as there is pressure on judiciary, Election Commission and Enforcement Directorate. "We keep saying our democracy is in danger as there is pressure on judiciary, ECI, ED & they're all misused. All decisions are made under influence. Such comments are common... Rahul Gandhi is a courageous man and only he can compete with NDA government," he said. Rahul Gandhi did not comment on the verdict and made a tweet in Hindi quoting Mahatma Gandhi. "My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it- Mahatma Gandhi," he said. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said her Rahul Gandhi is not afraid and will keep speaking the truth. "The entire scared machinery of power is trying to suppress the voice of Rahul Gandhi through 'saam, daam, dand, bhed'. My brother has never been afraid, nor will he ever be. He has lived speaking the truth, will continue to speak the truth," she said. The judgment of the Surat court relates to Rahul Gandhi's alleged remarks "how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname" made in April, 2019, at a Lok Sabha election rally at Kolar in Karnataka.

New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday hit back at the Aam Aadmi Party over the allegations of stalling the Delhi Budget 2023 and said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's only objective is to stage a drama and not presenting the budget or working for the development of the city. This comes a day after Kejriwal alleged that the Centre has stalled the Delhi budget, on the eve of its presentation scheduled on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference here, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Kejriwal has only one goal, not budget or development. Drama, drama and only drama. One drama was staged by Rahul Gandhi on foreign soil and another is being done by AAP in the country." "There is a provision of the law that the Delhi government sends the budget to the LG on March 9. LG sent 3-4 observations. In this, questions were raised on Delhi Jal Board, DTC including Delhi's infrastructure. The budget of Rs 270 crore for advertisement was increased to Rs 550 crore. LG raised questions on this. LG raised questions on Kejriwal buying a car for himself and getting a bungalow built. While he came in auto to take oath for the first time. LG has raised questions regarding central schemes," Patra elaborated. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party cannot run away from the questions and will have to answer them. "When any budget of a state is passed, before that the approval and consent of the President is taken. The budget of Delhi was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Home Ministry wrote a polite letter that LG has 3-4 questions which are not binding, but it would be better if you answer them. Patra said that whatever suggestion LG gives, you put your point on it. In a democracy, questions will be asked. If you are spending crores of rupees on advertisements then questions will be asked. You have to answer," he said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena alleging that the raising of observations on the Budget was against the Constitution and that LG has no right to raise any objection to the Budget. "According to the law, the Central government has no right to interfere in the Delhi budget. Whatever it did was unconstitutional. But we don't want to fight with the government. We satisfied their ego, they sent four points. We gave the answers to all four and they passed the Budget. You could have passed it yesterday," Kejriwal said addressing the media here. "It was only for ego satisfaction that they have compelled us to bow down. The LG has no power to raise any objection or make any observation on the Budget, it is beyond his power. So whatever observation was raised was against the Constitution," he added.

"Scared of defeat...": Karnataka CM Bommai lashes out at Congress

Hubballi (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday hit out at the Congress, saying that the frustrated Congress party has continued the series of releasing bogus schemes over fears of losing the coming election. CM Bommai's remarks came in the wake of poll promises, given by the Congress party in a bid to return to the helm of the state after a gap of five years. Stating the poll promises of the Congress as bogus, the CM said the party had announced three bogus schemes. "The Congress party had promised to give a monthly payment of Rs 1,500 to degree holders in Rajasthan but has not been implemented. In Chattisgarh, they had assured Rs 1,500 which is not in the ground. Like this, they have not kept up promises in four to five states," he said. "That list of unfulfilled promises will be released soon," the CM added. Bommai also said that the reason behind the Congress leaders announcing bogus announcements is their frustration. "Since it is difficult for the party to win the election, they make such bogus announcements. They are all set to cheat the people. But the people will not believe them," CM said. "In 2010, 10 kg of rice was distributed but it was reduced to 5 kg after the Congress Party came to power. During the 2018 Assembly polls, the then CM Siddaramaiah hiked it to 7 kg. It has been the tradition of the Congress party to tell lies and announce bogus policies during the election," he added. Launching a barb at leader party MP Rahul Gandhi, he said, "Rahul Gandhi, a 'great leader' who has high respect for the country, talks very low about India on foreign soil. Rahul did not have love, affection, or commitment to Karnataka. So, he is trying to fool people which is not possible," he said. Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi addressed a gathering at Belagavi, wherein he raked up the issue of the BJP MLA's son who was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8 crore, and alleged that the state government attempted to "shield" him. "The son of the MLA is caught taking Rs 8 crore as a bribe, no action is taken, and the government shields him. There were numerous job scams. Corruption is being done as all the benefits are being given to two-three selected people. The Congress party will give Rs 3,000 to every graduate for two years, and Rs 1,500 to every diploma-holder for two years because we understand your problem. We will give jobs to 10 lakhs youths in five years," he said.

Bandi Sanjay calls for judicial inquiry into Telangana govt exam cancellation

Hyderabad (Telangana) : Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party chief Bandi Sanjay on Saturday attacked the KCR government over the cancellation of the assistant engineer exam paper by the Telangana State Public Service Commission and called for a judicial inquiry into the matter. Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) had ordered the cancellation of an examination held on March 5, this year in view of a paper leak. Accusing the Telangana government of spoiling the lives of lakhs of students, Bandi said that they are protesting on roads and the government is not giving any response."You (state govt) do not care to conduct the exam after cancelling a paper. You have spoiled the lives of 30 lakh students. Now, you are going to Delhi saying there is some case. Before talking about other states, you first talk about Telangana. The youth have come onto the roads and are protesting. But you are not responding to it or even giving them some faith. If something good happens, you take credit but when something bad happens, you put it on someone else," he said. Bandi said that if any person from the BJP is involved in the matter, he should be arrested and an investigation should be carried out by a sitting judge. "The mother of Renuka is BRS sarpanch and her brother is a BRS party leader. If anyone from BJP is involved, arrest them too. Why have you closed off the investigation? An investigation should be done by a sitting judge if you have not done any mistakes. You just keep shouting BJP is involved. But they (TSPSC people) are working under you since 2017. You have put them in TSPSC. You could not catch a thief in so many years. What have you done? You have cancelled the exams," the BJP leader said. Asked if Rajshekhar, an accused in TSPSC is a BJP worker, he said, "Who is the Karyakartha of whom? Even a startup company before appointing someone checks their background and their history. Isn't this your inefficiency? What did your commission do? What did TSPSC do? Many students who did not even have enough money for coaching, studied hard for the exams. Go to the library, you will know how sad the students are."

"Will keep trying to help Marathi-speaking people..." Maharashtra minister on health insurance scheme for villages bordering Karnataka

Mumbai (Maharashtra) : Following Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's remark that he would take measures to stop Maharashtra from offering the health insurance scheme in 865 border villages, Maharashtra Minister Shambhuraj Desai on Thursday said the Eknath Shinde government will keep trying to help the Marathi-speaking people provide health facilities. "Talks on 865 villages on the border of Karnataka and Maharashtra are already going on. The matter has also been to Supreme Court before. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also called on Chief Ministers of both states to find a compromised solution," If the Karnataka government takes any action to stop these facilities, we will anyhow keep trying to help the Marathi-speaking people provide health facilities," added the Minister. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai on Thursday strongly condemned the Maharashtra Cabinet's decision on the health insurance scheme for border villages between the two states. Addressing mediapersons, Bommai said, "Maharashtra cabinet's resolution announcing health insurance scheme for the people of Karnataka border is an unforgivable crime. When spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he said we should wait for the Supreme Court's order. It was agreed that there should be no provocation. Now, this is violated. The order should be withdrawn immediately." This matter will also be brought to the attention of the Home Minister, CM Bommai said Karnataka can also announce projects like this. "Many taluks and gram panchayats have already decided that we are not getting justice in Maharashtra and should join Karnataka. In such a situation, the Maharashtra government should act very responsibly," he said. This comes after the Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra recently announced an additional Rs 54 crore to implement the 'Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana' in villages bordering Karnataka.Maharashtra Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on the dispute with Karnataka over border areas saying that the state will legally pursue the inclusion of 865 disputed Marathi-speaking villages that are in Karnataka. Earlier, the Maharashtra assembly unanimously passed the resolution which says that Maharashtra will fight the pending case in the Supreme Court with full strength for the inclusion of each and every inch of 865 villages including Belgavi, Karwar, Nipani, Bidar Bhalki in Maharashtra. The resolution also condemned the Karnataka administration for its anti-Marathi stand in the border area. According to the resolution the Maharashtra government will stand behind the Marathi people in border areas and will go for a legal fight in the Supreme Court to ensure that these areas become a part of Maharashtra. The Central government should urge the Karnataka Government to implement the decision taken in the meeting with the Union Home Minister and the government should be given the understanding to guarantee the safety of the Marathi people in the border areas, the resolution read. Notably, the border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka dates back to the implementation of the State Reorganization Act, of 1956. The then Maharashtra government had demanded the readjustment of its border with Karnataka. Following this, a four-member committee was formed by both states. The Maharashtra government had expressed willingness to transfer 260 predominantly Kannada-speaking villages, but the proposal was turned down by Karnataka. Both governments later approached the Supreme Court to expedite the matter.
